Nicholas C. Derzis currently serves as the Mayor of Hoover, Alabama, having assumed office on November 3, 2025. He is committed to putting residents first, ensuring public safety, promoting economic growth, and maintaining transparent, accountable city government.

Mayor Derzis has deep roots in Hoover, having lived in the community for more than four decades. He began his career with the Hoover Police Department in 1979 and served in various roles before becoming Chief of Police in 2005. During his tenure, he led the department through numerous initiatives to enhance public safety, including the implementation of the School Resource Officer program, collaborative multi-agency law enforcement efforts, and achieving national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

A native of Berlin, Germany, Mayor Derzis grew up as the son of a U.S. Army colonel, spending part of his youth in Arlington, Virginia, before moving to Alabama. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Samford University while working full-time in law enforcement and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Mayor Derzis and his wife, Stephanie, are active members of the Holy Trinity & Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. They have three children and are longtime residents of the Riverchase area. In his free time, he enjoys college sports, outdoor activities, and travel.

As mayor, Nicholas Derzis is dedicated to strengthening Hoover’s reputation for excellence, revitalizing key commercial areas, improving infrastructure, and fostering strong partnerships with residents, schools, and community organizations.
